Le Mandragot: a story, a name and a place to experience in the Aspe Valley
If you stay at Le Mandragot, you're in Bedous, a lively and welcoming village in the Aspe Valley, surrounded by mountains, hiking trails, and genuine local life. Before becoming what it is today, Le Mandragot had several lives, always linked to hospitality and welcoming travelers.
The building was long a municipal hostel, intended for hikers, pilgrims on the Way of St. James, and travelers passing through. After a period of closure, the municipality of Bedous chose to completely renovate it in order to revitalize the site and increase accommodation options in the valley. The project transformed the former communal hostel into a collection of comfortable apartments, while preserving the welcoming spirit that has always been part of its history.
"What is 'Le Mandragot'?"
The name often intrigues, and that's normal. The Mandrake refers to a figure from the folklore of the Southwest, sometimes called a "silver cat" or familiar spirit. In Gascon legends, the mandragot is a mysterious, discreet, protective being, often associated with houses and places steeped in history.
This name immediately seemed right to me: a nod to local traditions, to the imagination, and to this idea of a refuge somewhat outside of time, where one comes to settle down, rest and leave feeling lighter.
The Mandragot today
Today, Le Mandragot offers seven independent accommodations, including five apartments, a studio, and a room adapted for people with reduced mobility, accommodating up to 15 people in total. Each unit is designed to offer independence, comfort, and tranquility, whether you are traveling alone, as a couple, with family, or with friends. The apartments are fully equipped, allowing everyone to enjoy their stay at their own pace in a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
The cottage is located in the centre of the village, a few minutes' walk from the train station, shops, restaurants and the weekly market. It is an ideal starting point for exploring the valley: hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, walks to Fort du Portalet or excursions to the Spanish side… everything is easily accessible, without needing to take the car for every outing.
A personalized welcome
My name is Helena and I have been the manager of Mandragot since January 2026. I live less than 200 meters from the gîte, which allows me to be present and available if needed, while still allowing everyone their privacy.
I'm available to answer your questions, recommend a suitable hike, a local restaurant, or a lesser-known spot to discover. Le Mandragot isn't a large establishment, and that's intentional: the idea here is for you to feel comfortable and at home from the moment you arrive.
Daily services and attention
Today I offer a breakfast service by reservation, carefully prepared and designed to suit the pace of travelers. Other services will gradually be added to the offering, always in the same spirit: simplicity, comfort and respect for the place and its environment.
A place to take a break
Whether you're passing through for a night, staying for several days, or hiking the valley trails, the Mandragot is designed as a place where you can truly take a break. A break to breathe, to enjoy the mountains, to take your time.
I especially hope that you will find it a pleasant, welcoming and sincere place, and that your stay in the Aspe Valley will make you want to come back.
